If you own the region one Sliders DVD sets, you already know the packaging is far from pristine. I was quite alarmed by the foam that is used in the dual-dimension edition, since it may cause scratching. I found out however, as far as my own use, there were little if any scratches.

But then when we thought it couldn’t get worse, it did. The season three DVD set came with double sided discs overlaying on top of one another. Not to mention the annoying orange plastic that always bends in your way while you’re trying to get a disc. Trying to get a disc out without smudging it is like performing a precise surgery incision.

By then, I had enough. I eventually bought a small wooden case that has the so-called “sleeves”. I found this to be even more of a problem than the foam or overlaying discs. The discs are hard to remove since there is only a slot at the top of the sleeve and they’re almost as rough as light sandpaper. Plain and simple, I just decided to put the discs back in their original packaging.

I looked into various DVD cases including thin paks (small DVD cases), and about any case suitable. I felt 10 cases were just too much, too many, and too confusing to keep up with so I abandoned that plan.

Not longer after, the season four DVD set was released. Finally, there was a DVD set I could live with, as well as other Sliders fans. It isn’t perfect but it is created like a book, where each DVD is placed in a small plastic page. At times I want and need to go back and watch seasons one through three. I became concerned again especially for season three’s discs. So I just put the first three seasons in CD cases. Still though, it felt odd that season four was in its own case while the other ten cases are scattered and mixed.

After much research and browsing I came upon a case called Discus, created by Discgear. It’s a round CD/DVD case that opens on both ends (a double sided case). Each holder has soft fabric that allows me to hold the DVD from the side… not the top of a double sided disc. You may have heard of the product or own one yourself. It sounds like it was a hit in the late 90s, but by it’s design it also has a Sliders feel. The creative catch is that each side that you open holds ten DVDs, for a total of twenty discs.

Side A of my Discus case holds the first three seasons of Sliders; ten discs in all. While side B holds the five discs of season four. Assuming that a season five set will have five DVDs or less… I’m covered. And there you have it, one small compact CD/DVD case that holds all my Sliders DVDs.

If you’re interested in the Discus case you can find more info at: Discgear.com
What are some of your Sliders DVD re-packaging solutions?

DVD Review: The Fourth Season (Region 1)
Release Date: 3/25/08
DVD Set Rating: 8/10

This Fourth Season set is very similar in appearance to the Third Season. It looks like a disappointment yet again, and it harkens back to the rigid plastic that was presented for the third season. However, once you open the green colored case and discover more, it’s quite a different story.

The set is actually a book case design, and you can fold over each page. Each page contains one disc and they’re not overlaid. Best of all– the discs are single sided. Yes, the plastic is cheap, but what case isn’t? This fourth season case holds together so much better than all of the previous sets.

Once you slide out the case you will find an episode guide that’s actually a part of the case; it’s on the front and it continues on the back. Guess what? It’s in the correct episode production order too. The plastic case has a little style to it and I think you’ll enjoy it. There was really no style given to the third season set, just a bunch of clear orange plastic. On the back of the box there’s a synopsis of the series and the design is also similar to the previous set. But interestingly enough it’s not glued to the back, it’s actually a part of the box.

The menu has a totally new look with some Sliders theme music with a short interval of collaborated video. On a good note, the scenes that were cut for U.S. commercial airtime are included in the episodes for those who haven’t seen them. On to the disappointments; there are neither episode summaries nor any scene selections. The episode summaries are including on the case, however they’re not in the DVD menus. All you get is a numbered list of the episodes to play. However there is a “Play All” feature which is quite nice since the episodes are placed in the correct order. There are no extras which is a shame since “The Making of Sliders“ was aired during the run of the fourth season. There are some sneak peeks of other Universal Studios shows, if you want to call that an extra.

Overall this is a rather big step for the Sliders DVD sets, at least for the packaging. While there are no extras, scene selections, or menu episode summaries, I feel that the case design more than makes up for those flaws.

You can purchase The Fourth Season set at your local retailer or at various places online including: NBC Universal Store

Details:

Recommended: Slidecage’s Third Season Discography PDF. The Third Season set organizes the episodes in the order of their original airing. The FOX network aired the episodes in the incorrect episode production order. Although the correct episode order isn’t as critical in continuity as the first two seasons are, I still recommend this guide. By following Slidecage’s DVD discography you will be watching the episodes in the order they were intended to be watched.

Bonus Features:

Disc 4:

- Cleopatra 2525: “Quest for Firepower”
- Earth 2: “The Man Who Fell To Earth (Two)”
- Sliders Gag Reel: Runtime is approximately six minutes

DVD Review: The Third Season (Region 1)
Release Date: 7/19/05
Review Rating: 5/10

This Third Season set is rather similar in appearance to the previous Dual-Dimension DVD. However, it’s a rather abrupt change towards my dissatisfaction. The package design is made of out an orange plastic which slides into a metallic looking cardboard slip. The discs are partially overlaid over one another which makes it quite difficult to remove them. Not only that, the discs are double sided, making it even more of a challenge to remove them without smearing and scratching the discs.

This is by far one of most cheapest and problematic DVD sets I’ve encountered. The orange plastic is sturdy by the way, so much so that you have to use both hands to open it, till you have no hands to remove a disc. If you don’t have patience or a steady hand I would highly recommend buying another DVD case for this set. Otherwise you will run the risk of smearing the discs and perhaps even scratching them.

The previous Dual-Dimension (The First and Second Seasons) set does come with an episode guide, but it’s out of order. Well this set doesn’t even have one at all. All it has is a brief synopsis of the series glued to the back of the box. Continuity plays a relatively small factor in watching the third season, but I still recommend Slidecage’s DVD Discography above, which is in accordance to the correct episode production order– the order they were meant to be watched.

The extras on this set aren’t much. Two different episodes from the series, Cleopatra 2525 and Earth 2 are provided. As for Sliders extras, a short six minute gag reel of the third season is given. It’s been edited quite a bit; and edited quite poorly if you ask me. They left out a lot of gags and even left in an large expletive by Kari Wuhrer. The video and audio is quite poor too, but at least we get something that’s about Sliders. More extras could have been presented but the whole B side of the disc is left blank.

The menus have episode summaries, subtitles, and scene selections. The main menu also contains some Sliders theme music with a short interval of collaborated video. The video and audio is presented well, but every time an episode is started an intro of Universal Studios and their logo is shown, which lasts about twenty seconds each time.

My major complaints are again the cheap materials of the set, as well as the extreme difficulty of removing the discs. However, the third season does offer a few excellent episodes and if you’re a Sliders fan this is a must have, regardless of the packaging.

You can purchase The Third Season set at your local retailer or at various places online including: NBC Universal Store

DVD Review: The Dual-Dimension Edition: The First and Second Seasons (Region 1)
Original Release Date: 8/3/04
Review Rating: 7/10

The first thing to notice about this set is the metallic appearance of the box and how the discs appear to float out into the clear plastic. It’s a clever design appearance that stands out among the majority of other TV DVD sets. One of the problems however, is that the discs are placed in a thin piece of foam to give you this look. The idea of keeping your DVDs scratch free comes to mind. But remarkably I’ve had no problems of keeping them scratch free in this foam. If you feel like that’s too much of a chance you can always opt. and buy a better DVD case.

This set does have a DVD guide, but it’s glued to the back on the box and to beat it all the guide has the episodes in the order they were originally aired. This is quite troubling even though the FOX network did air them this way. Continuity plays a factor in watching them, that’s why Slidecage has offered you a DVD Discography above, which is in accordance to the correct production order– the order they were meant to be watched.

One of the gems of this set is the “Pilot” audio commentary which offers some insights into the show. “The Making of Sliders” offers more insight too, but I really wish it was more than 14 minutes long. The video and audio is presented well but I will point out that the infamous “Sliders whisper” at the end of the theme song is left out in “The Weaker Sex”. The series is also known for using the “Sliders whisper” at commercial breaks and they’re all left out except for the ones in “El Sid”, which of course, makes no sense. The menus have episode summaries, subtitles, and scene selections. The main menu also contains some Sliders theme music with a short interval of collaborated video.

My only major complaints would be the cheap materials used to make the set and the lack of a broad range of extras. However, the extraordinary episodes of the first two seasons more than make-up the downsides I’ve mentioned. I highly recommend this set to all Sliders fans, even to the casual ones.

You can purchase the Dual-Dimension Edition set at your local retailer or at various places online including: NBC Universal Store
